Customers looking for a family SUV for commutes to school and to work, weekend getaways, and longer vacations are well-served by three-row SUVs like the Toyota Highlander and the Subaru Ascent near Plano. Both vehicles are great choices for a family car, with comfortable seating, plenty of space, and safety features galore. If you can only buy one, though, which should it be? Read on to find out!

Cargo and Passenger Capacity

A major reason to spring for a three-row SUV is its increased interior space, not only for up to 8 passengers, but for all the stuff they bring with them as well. In this area (or should we say volume?), the Subaru Ascent, with 17.8 cubic feet behind the third row, edges out the Highlander’s 16. With the seats folded down, the Ascent holds 86.5 cubic feet, while the Toyota Highlander can hold up to 84.3 cubic feet of stuff.

If you’re maxing out on passengers instead, the Subaru Ascent near Frisco wins again. Its way-back legroom measures at 31.7 inches, compared to the Highlander’s paltry 27.7 inches. Those four extra inches mean extra room for knee pads, books, or just laying down for a nap in the third row on long drives.

Available Powertrains

The Toyota Highlander offers two engine options on the new Highlander: a 3.5L V6 producing 295 hp, or a gasoline-electric hybrid featuring a 2.5L 4-cylinder and electric motors that output a total of 243 hp. That hybrid powertrain, though not as powerful, does feature a best-in-segment efficiency rating of 35/35 mpg city/highway with All-Wheel Drive, so if you care about gas mileage, the Highlander is hard to beat.

Meanwhile, the Subaru Ascent’s singular engine, a turbocharged Subaru BOXER® with standard All-Wheel Drive, delivers 260 horsepower at a lower RPM than the Highlander, making it feel punchier when accelerating from a standstill or towing a trailer up a mountain.

Speaking of towing, both vehicles top out at 5,000 pounds of capacity, which is plenty for most family trips.
